InnovaBone fosters future research and innovation in the field of bone and cartilage regeneration

InnovaBone partners recently published a report "Towards nanotechnology-based osteochondral reconstruction" on research in osteoarticular reconstruction, as a follow-up to the two major events organised by the Consortium during the project. The two international events, namely the "Clustering day" and the "Stakeholder day", brought together experts and participants from other EC-funded projects on a wide variety of fields as well as representatives from patient associations, health professionals, policy-makers, industrial players and citizens. The "Clustering day" aimed at using the extensive knowledge of the experts to contribute to policy implementation concerning the development of biomaterials for tissue regeneration. On the other hand, the "Stakeholder day" was organised for the benefit of stakeholders and was part of a two-day conference aimed at sharing the results obtained during the InnovaBone project on the topic of biomaterials for bone regeneration. The need for this publication emerged after the first event and was integrated and completed after the second event. Additionally, a refinement exercise took place from December 2016 to December 2017: it was carried out on a remote basis by a selection of different co-authors, which allowed to wrap up all statements from the two workshops and recommendations for EC policy makers. The report offers a fresh outlook on the prospects outlined by nanotechnology research for delivering innovation in the reconstruction of bones and joints. Diverse approaches are explored and assessed, ranging from tissue engineering to bio-mimicked processes, and biomaterials. The analysis and cross-assessment of the most prominent projects' achievements enabled us to set the stage for a multileveled and strategic discussion, shaping several key policy recommendations to foster future research and innovation in the field. Moreover, the suggestions given to the EC have been taken into consideration and two of the topics proposed and discussed during the workshops are included in the NMBP work programme 2018 - 2020: -NMBP-21-2020: Custom-made biological scaffolds for specific tissue regeneration and repair (RIA) -NMBP-22-2018: Osteoarticular tissues regeneration (RIA) The report has been published by the European Commission and is available for download here below. InnovaBone biopolymers confirmed safe for use in tissue regeneration

InnovaBone partners the University of Valladolid, the Medical University of Vienna and the University of Vienna have been working closely together to evaluate biocompatibility and immunogenicity of Elastin-like recombinamers (ELRs). ELRs were created for use as a smart biomaterial for tissue engineering. They are designed to mimic elastin, a protein normally found in human tissues, which allows them to behave just like the constituents of the tissues in which they are integrated. The three teams sought to establish a pre-clinical approach to evaluate biocompatibility in experimental mice using ELRs as a prototype biomaterial and achieved very promising results indicating that the ELRs are safe for use in tissue regeneration.
